Katie,
who is eight, did a very happy bear at our Capital City Mall workshop in
Harrisburg, Pa.
We like the way she dressed him and how well she did his paws. Notice the position of his body, slightly forward as if leaning on one leg. This gives her sketch a feeling of movement. When you're drawing an animal's or person's entire body, always try to give it some extra special little touch, just as Katie did. |
| Katya
is a girl who really, really loves cats (a quality that seems to go with
her name)! She sent us her drawings of angel cats, cats on stairs, cats
up a tree and cats in her room. She has two of her own, Sarah and
Gato, who are very lucky to have such a kind, cat-loving person to take
care of them.
We really like the expressions she put on the cats she drew, which are shown here. She didn't use too many lines to depict the nose, mouth, whiskers, eyes and stripes, but they are just right. A drawing doesn't have to be very complicated to be good -- a few lines in the right place will do the trick. Katya obviously is very observant of cats. Knowing your subject well like she does will always help you make a better drawing. |

| Samil,
who is six, did a very colorful butterfly inside a heart. We like the way
he drew the wings; you can almost see his butterfly soaring high on a strong
spring breeze.

Jessica,
who is seven, did her bear walking through the spring flowers with a bright
sun above.
He looks a little sleepy -- perhaps he just woke up from his winter's nap! We like the way Jessica dressed him up and made it look like he's walking. You can keep your scenery simple and still make a very good piece of art. |
| Megan's
bear looks like he's dancing! Notice how you can easily draw the bear's
paws by just using circles. If you want to add more detail, that's
fine, but it's up to you. When you start, keep it simple and see
if you like your drawing that way first.
Megan is nine, and did an excellent job of showing expression in her bear by having him look off to one side as if he sees something out of the scene. He looks happy though, so he must be seeing something nice. |
